Professional Background

A heritage specialist who bridged archaeology and gerontology

Síle's journey into accessible heritage tourism started in an unexpected way. She spent five years working as a site guide at the Hill of Tara, where she noticed something that bothered her. Visitors over 65 were getting left behind. Not literally—but the available walking options weren't designed for them, and many people who should've been able to explore these incredible sites simply couldn't.

That realisation changed everything. Rather than accept it as just the way things were, Síle decided to do something about it. She pursued a postgraduate qualification in Gerontology from Trinity College Dublin while continuing to work part-time in heritage interpretation. It wasn't the easiest path—balancing fieldwork with formal study—but it gave her something unique. She wasn't just another heritage guide or another gerontology specialist. She was both.

Today, she holds a degree in Archaeology from University College Dublin and that postgraduate qualification in Gerontology. As Head of Trail Development at nortique Ltd, she's responsible for creating evidence-based walking guides for seniors. But the work goes deeper than just writing guides. She collaborates with the Office of Public Works and multiple local heritage organisations. She tests every route with actual groups of older walkers—not assumptions, real people, real feedback.

What drives her is straightforward: Ireland's ancient sites shouldn't be exclusive to the young and able-bodied. Everyone deserves access to the stories these places hold. And if that means rethinking how trails are marked, where rest points are placed, or how information is presented, that's exactly what she'll do.

Philosophy & Approach

How she designs trails that actually work

Síle's approach to heritage accessibility rests on one fundamental belief: assumptions are dangerous. Too many people assume they know what older adults want or what they're capable of. She doesn't assume anything.

Instead, she tests. She takes draft routes out with real groups of older walkers. She watches where people naturally want to rest. She listens to what catches their attention. She notes which sections feel rushed and which ones people linger over. This isn't guesswork—it's observation. And observation reveals truths that planning documents never could.

Her routes balance three things equally. First, historical accuracy. The stories these sites tell matter, and they deserve to be told properly. Second, physical reality. Older bodies have different needs—terrain matters, distance matters, shade matters, rest points matter. Third, genuine engagement. She doesn't want people just walking through a site. She wants them to actually understand it, to feel connected to it, to leave with real knowledge about why these places mattered and why they still do.

Testing Over Assumptions

Every route is walked with actual groups of older adults before publication. Real feedback drives every design decision.

Historical Integrity

Accessibility doesn't mean simplification. Complex stories are told clearly, not dumbed down or rewritten for convenience.

Physical Realism

Routes account for actual terrain, weather, fatigue, and the real pace at which older bodies move and recover.

Collaboration First

Working with heritage organisations and local communities ensures routes fit into the broader landscape and respect existing sites.

Current Focus Areas

Where her work is concentrated right now

Hill of Tara Royal Enclosure Loop

Developing a gentle, accessible loop route around Tara's royal enclosure that tells the story of Ireland's ancient kings while remaining realistic for older walkers. This is where her journey began, and it remains her flagship project.

Gentle Hill Fort Trails for Seniors

Creating a series of accessible routes across Meath's ancient hill forts. Each trail is designed to be manageable for older adults while preserving the sense of discovery and connection to Ireland's Iron Age landscape.

Senior-Friendly Heritage Tourism Research

Leading research initiatives at nortique Ltd to understand what actually works for older adults in heritage settings. This research informs all her trail design work and contributes to broader conversations about accessible tourism.
